SiC (Silicon Carbide) is the hardest and sharpest of the minerals used in abrasives. Thanks to its hardness and very sharp shape, this abrasive is ideal for multiple applications that do not require great pressure when cutting. Its grains are friable and, when broken, they continually expose new cutting edges that allow rapid removal of the material. It is more aggressive than Alox but wears out more quickly.

Vulcanized fiber is a composite material made from cellulose (cotton or cellulose fibers). It is produced by guiding blankets of cotton and/or cellulose fibers through a bath with chemicals, causing partial dissolution of the fibers, and then pressed in order to unite the fibers normally without the addition of any binding agents. The final product has great stability, mechanical resistance, low weight, excellent ductility, but there are two characteristics that must be highlighted.
On the one hand, it resists temperatures up to around 110°C, so during operation with fiber discs these temperature levels should not be reached.
On the other hand, vulcanized fiber is hygroscopic, i.e. it absorbs or releases moisture from the environment, causing volume changes in the fibers. Therefore, fiber discs exposed to too much or too little humidity tend to deform. It is recommended to store it in environments with relative humidity levels between 45% to 65%.
The fiber has thicknesses that, on disc (its most common application in the abrasive industry) can vary between 0.6 and 0.8 mm in thickness.
